Like Billy Joel says in one of his songs, I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints - The sinners are much more fun” That is why I defend the sinner, the devil , the incarnation of Evil Leoncio Almeida. As Joel’s song also says, “ would not leave you in your times of trouble. We never could have come this far. I took the good times, I'll take the bad times, I'll take you just the way you are.” That is the way that despite his apparent sexual advances Leoncio loves Isaura., He really loves her I would say that even more than "prince charming "alvaro. Leoncio suffers her disdain her indifference. He in his twisted way loves her the way she is and only wants her affection. He values her intelligence and purity. Alvaro in his magnanimous worldview decides that he will look down on the pretty slave and do her the favor of saving her. For Alvaro Isaura is not a companion she is only a trophy that he must obtain to satisfy his ego. Because he is so perfect, he decides her destiny. Sees her “loves” her and decides to be become her savior as he does with all the slaves . He helps the slaves to feed his ego. He likes the adulation and adoration he gets for being so "good" He loves that the masses marvel at his speeches at his "disinterested" actions. He kind to the point of hurting other's feelings as he did with Blanca yesterday. Self Centered Alvaro has it all figured out and he is too perfect and angelical he's unreal and righteous to me. In doing so much good he is an idealist and almost arrogant in his kindness. Alvaro will keep the girl by default because he is the " good guy" and that’s the way it has to be. However, for me Alvaro not so good and Leoncio is not so bad. In addition, if you ask me how loves Isaura more well its Leoncio because he never was given a chance to love her and because he suffers for it unlike Alvaro.I deep inside I would of liked for a character like leoncio to have a new oportunity to redeem himself to rule over sin with love I would of liked for Isaura to have been his new eve in paradise because he says he wants her body but what he really wanted was a companion a piece of heaven right . For me leoncio is Cain in paradise, but unlike Cain he was not given a chance for redemption by god/ Eve/ Isuara and this makes him fall to a precipice from which he cant get out. It is so tragic I feel empathy for our fallen angel-leoncio If only Isaura would of tried to see beyond the devil and would of seen the lonely man and could of understood his pain another story could of been told. In the real version of our story, Leoncio kills himself because he cannot live with the idea of Isaura not loving him. He understands that he must leave this world for her to be happy. That is his ultimate actof love and sacrifice In the new version he kidnaps her and later is killed but ( for rating purposes) before then he is able to tell Isaura how much he really loves her. Tells her how much she meant to him. How truly lonely he was and most importantly that he did not mean to hurt her in loving her and is somewhat able to redeem his soul.
